The Prophet Muhammad is said to have given his last sermon at the top of Mount Arafat, also known as the Mount of Mercy. Praying on the Mount is considered to be the most important part of the Hajj Pilgrimage. Visitors to the Mount will see hundreds of photographs on the ground or hidden among rocks, some with messages of supplication written on the reverse, some taken during the Hajj, others clearly brought from abroad to be left here. These ritual remnants are regularly collected by Saudi religious police and burned. Along with the installation, the work includes a video of the artist and other construction workers building the mosque in the desert outside Riyadh, staging a prayer performance and then deinstalling it. The incident dispelled the idea of the gallery as a "safe" space and exposed the long-standing link between art and violence; whether it be violence as an artistic theme, violence as a process required in the production of artwork, or violence within the artistic establishment itself. Violence makes its way into galleries in many forms.
